Chiang Mai

Trip: Singapore -->Kuala Lumpur --> Penang -->Phuket -->Bangkok -->Chiang Mai -->

From LeAnn's e-mail: Joel talked about their ride through the very crowded streets from the Bangkok hotel to the train station. The heavy traffic was worrisome but they still made it with time to spare. Joel said going 1st class would have limited them to two to a cabin. By going the next class down, the three boys shared their cabin with one other person – a British student who attends University College of London where Joel studied. They caught up on things in and around their shared experience at the school and all finally went to sleep by 11 p.m. The next morning he was able to watch the landscape for about an hour before pulling in to the train station in Chiang Mai.

The boys were packing up after their extra day on the beach (Phaka) and were headed to the airport to fly on to Bangkok. They took a cab across town for $1.

The boys flew in this morning (June 15, 2011) from Penang, Malaysia to Phuket, Thailand and are staying until Saturday at the new hotel Nap Patang which is situated on “world famous” Patang Beach -one of the places we became familiar with when the Tsunami hit that part of the world in 2004.  (click to see the video)

Penang is on an island on the west coast of Malaysia. pending photos from the boys.

From LeAnn's e-mail: Joel evidently ran in to some UPenn students on the flight from Penang to Phuket. One of the girls used to date one of his roommates from his 2nd year. Small world. It just proves you have to mind your manners all the time!

Kuala Lumpur

Trip: Singapore -->Kuala Lumpur --> Penang -->Phuket -->Bangkok -->Chiang Mai -->

According to LeAnn's e-mail (June 10, 2011): the boys took a monorail ride from just outside their hotel to the main train station. From there they went out on the “kommuter line” about 8 kilometers to a sandstone outcropping that included some spectacular and historical caves. The carved statues housed in them were Hindu in nature, and the caves were very deep and the ceilings were high.

Joel DID locate the two buildings in Kuala Lumpur that were on our (Slater's) old family postcards ( pictures of a Kuala Lumpur mosque and of the Government Building taken in about 1913 when LeAnn's grandfather was working in the Borneo area).
