The boys were packing up after their extra day on the beach (Phaka) and were headed to the airport to fly on to Bangkok. They took a cab across town for $1.

The boys flew in this morning (June 15, 2011) from Penang, Malaysia to Phuket, Thailand and are staying until Saturday at the new hotel Nap Patang which is situated on “world famous” Patang Beach -one of the places we became familiar with when the Tsunami hit that part of the world in 2004.  (click to see the video)

Penang is on an island on the west coast of Malaysia. pending photos from the boys.

From LeAnn's e-mail: Joel evidently ran in to some UPenn students on the flight from Penang to Phuket. One of the girls used to date one of his roommates from his 2nd year. Small world. It just proves you have to mind your manners all the time!

Kuala Lumpur

Trip: Singapore -->Kuala Lumpur --> Penang -->Phuket -->Bangkok -->Chiang Mai -->

According to LeAnn's e-mail (June 10, 2011): the boys took a monorail ride from just outside their hotel to the main train station. From there they went out on the “kommuter line” about 8 kilometers to a sandstone outcropping that included some spectacular and historical caves. The carved statues housed in them were Hindu in nature, and the caves were very deep and the ceilings were high.

Joel DID locate the two buildings in Kuala Lumpur that were on our (Slater's) old family postcards ( pictures of a Kuala Lumpur mosque and of the Government Building taken in about 1913 when LeAnn's grandfather was working in the Borneo area).

Singapore

Trip: Singapore -->Kuala Lumpur --> Penang -->Phuket -->Bangkok -->Chiang Mai -->

Singapore is the first stop for Ming's Southeast Asia trip.  It seems Ming like the city a lot because it's better than what he expected.  It's hot and humid but the city is so modern that he did not feel the bothersome of the heat.

Leaving for Kuala Lumpur

Side story: Ming should have arrived Singapore with Chun on the midnight of May 30 but Chun's flight from Kansas City was cancelled due to the bad weather in Chicago.  Ming arrived Shangari-La apartment by himself, but the name to be allowed to check in was Lisi because Ming was not in the relocation dependent's list. It took quite a bit of clarification for Ming to get in the apartment.

Landed in Singapore

After a month long exhausted packing to vacate our resident in Topeka, Kansas, we finally landed in Singapore in the early morning of June 6 after 17 plus hours non-stop fly from Newark airport.  It was a very long trip but I almost slept through it because I have not had a good night sleep since we started the moving process.

Now I am here, in Singapore to start another chapter of my life as an expat dependent.  I don’t know how soon I can adjust / settle down in the new place but I do know that I want to enjoy every day and make the best out of this journey.

Yellowstone -Faithful

Old Faithful Geyser has been so FAITHFUL that it has been erupting in nearly the same fashion throughout the recorded history of Yellowstone Park: it erupts on an average of every 80 minutes and shoots out hot water up to 184 feet high into the air.
